New York’s Madison Square Park Lights Up with LED Lighting Designed by Fernekes Designs

LED artist Erwin Redl's latest public artwork "Whiteout" consists of almost 1000 weatherproof LED balls suspended in Madison Square Park. The piece provides a stunning choreographed light show that plays elegantly throughout the array.

The design challenge was to develop a strategy focused on simplifying the wiring to the absolute minimum, while providing the most even, smooth lighting effect.

I just discovered this part recently, they are quite interesting and I can imagine all kinds of neat applications for this device.

The principle of operation is very similar to a piezoelectric beeper, only the operating frequency is an inaudible 25 kHz, the unit has a diaphragm that is excited into vibration by a piezo-ceramic disc, the vibrations induce an airflow through the device at an impressive rate of up to 1 liter per minute and can produce pressure differences up to 2 kPa. (not at the same time!) It's also TINY! you can fit this device into tight spaces and do things that would be very difficult any other way.

Modern LCD TVs often have built-in media players which make them great candidates for stand-alone media art players, the main problem is how do you make the TV play the media file on power-up? Most require intervention using the remote, going through menus, etc.
